About Us

Lochi Lochner is the founder and sole proprietary owner of this small hunting outfit called “Custom Safaris”.  He guides foreign hunters part time during his annual vacations.  His market focus is the budget driven first-timer-to-Africa who never dreamt of affording an African safari. His specialty is to design (with the client) an itinerary that best optimizes expenses in pursuit of the ideal hunting safari holiday.  Lochi has a full time day job, so he has limited vacation time for only few safaris per year.  Since he guides for the fun of the outdoor experience, he chooses his clients carefully.

Lochi has a small trusted circle of personal friends who assist him with guiding when safari dates conflict.  They are also qualified as PHs to the requirements of Departments Nature Conservation of the different provinces.

His family fully supports him in this part time hunting venture (that one day may become a retirement hobby!)

Lochi has also done another hunting web site that is pure informative - tells the reader about hunting practices in South Africa, about Lochi's personal hunting experiences and African varmint and "econo game".  For some fun reading visit African Econo Hunting

Lochi  was born in 1947 in the arid Namaqualand, where people to this day still call a spade a spade.  He grew up in a conservative and religious  Afrikaner household on a farm, with .177 air gun for 7th birthday and soon got promoted to .22 rim fire.  Introduced to shoes at secondary school.

After high school he spent 1 year in the (voluntary) Army Gymnasium and thereafter 2 years in an elite unit known as the Military Academy. Tertiary education at University of Stellenbosch (B.Sc.,B. Eng.) and later University of Cape Town (M. Ind. Admin).

Since youth days he enjoyed sport of all kinds.  Track athletics led to enduro sport like road cycling, road running, river canoeing and triathlons (at national level).  Besides experimenting with sky diving, on-road and off-road biking, boating, paddle skiing, fishing and SCUBA diving, he is still a keen spear fisherman and goes to gym regularly to stay fit.

Lochi lately lives in a small, tranquil village near Johannesburg, South Africa.  He had been married to Erna for over 34 years. They have one magnum son Tobie and two beautiful daughters Ira and Grethe. They all enjoy good health for which they are thankful.

He is currently employed as Group Quality Director with a listed international engineering firm in Johannesburg.  He is serious about his job and loyal to the company that supported his family for the last 21 years.

Lochi is passionate about conservation and hunting, and spends most of his free time doing just that.  He has a special appreciation for predator calling. He is a Nature Conservation qualified Professional Hunter and member of PHASA (Professional Hunters Association of South Africa).

Lochi rates himself as an “average” shot, “reasonable” at bush craft and an “excellent” client servant.
